For the most part, I have been pretty quite about Stinger's events since I took over 2 weeks ago. I made some initial changes, but mostly just easing myself into Saturday foosball again. In essence, I want to find that sweet spot between late night Duke's and an afternoon at The Loft. However, there were even greater issues going on that left everything in doubt.

In other words, the largest concern for Bill and I, was the viability of Stinger's as a foosball venue in the first place. Look, it is no state secret that the joint has been experiencing some massive problems due to life changing events that greatly impacted the ownership. Those issues, however, are truly beginning to work themselves out. Long story short, both Billy and I have stuck with Stinger's since Stinger's stuck by us for so long.

At the same time, we are both keenly aware that the troubles with service and product availability has severally hurt player turn out. But, change is coming. Change is coming to the location, and change is coming to the tournaments. There is still some unknowns concerning Stinger's, but Bill and I have been led to believe that there is a future for foosball at the location. And, as far as changes to the tournaments, the change is to bring about consistency and uniformity to both venues, Stinger's and Duke's.

Now, on to the first change of significance, and the last time I will make this sort of change, as it is far too important...the start time. I don't know about you, but for me, the Stinger's Saturday 6 pm start time was a horse shit idea! Since I need to be at the venue about an hour prior to the event, it ended up messing with family dinner time. That is not acceptable for me. With this in mind, I need to move it to 7 pm. Any time you mess with start times, you are asking for problems. However, this is simply one of them things that I have to do. My apologies.

Next, I have change number two. As I alluded to, I wish to bring consistency and a touch of uniformity to Duke's and Stinger's. This is largely due to my desire to simplify as much as possible and the knowledge that upkeep costs are the same at both locations. The new format is also meant to recognize League players. The value that League has provided to our foos community can not be overstated. I wish to reflect this importance in how I run my events by introducing Active League Player status. It is just what it states it is, while league is running, Active League Players will pay less! When league is not active, you pay the normal entry fee. Thus, the shared entry fee format will be:

Open Doubles format:
$10.00 Pro/Ex - $7.00 Am/Beg (-$2.00 for Active League Players)

Draw Your Partner format:
$10.00 All Players (-$2.00 for Active League Players)

Roto Events (to clarify which format applies):
$10.00 Pro/Ex - $7.00 Am/Beg (-$2.00 for Active League Players)

I hope that all this change will not upset our community of foosers. Personally, I see it more as a return to how Stinger's used to be. And, I feel strongly about reflecting the time and commitment it takes to play League and weekend tourney's. Truly, we have a great thing going here and I am just experimenting with the methods to its madness in order to promote its insanity! Nothing is set in stone, but I made some changes to all the "Coming Events" for October meant to reflect this (did this about 4 days ago actually) for both venues. You may wish to look into them. And, feel free to provide feedback.

These forums are not working properly for me. Says I am editing when not, doesn't post sometimes, clicking preview the first time deletes the message. Took forever to even figure out how to reply, since quick reply kept deleting whatever the fuck I wrote. Funky town!

A couple of words of advice, might or might not help. Practice. It's important. The more, the better, both alone, playing pick-up games, playing tourneys and leagues, any and all table time helps your game. That being said, the bare basics for practicing alone should include practicing the things you will be doing in a game, focus on passing the ball (easily the most important aspect of the forward game), catching the ball, dribbling the ball and ball control in general, and shooting the ball. Your passes and shots should be executed the same way you would in a game...set the ball up without using your hands, SIT on the ball (15 seconds is a long time, 2 seconds...mot so much), and visualize being in a match, match point, you make the shot you win...Practice doesn't make perfect....perfect practice makes perfect. Work on your weak points. Most people are right handed and don't spend nearly enough time practicing with their left. That's a weakness. The more times you have the ball, the better your odds are of scoring. This is all old news for most of the veterans in the group.

I agree very much. In fact, one of the things I have planned for the future of the Stinger's venue will be organized entirely around this concept. At Duke's, there are evenings with Singles, followed by a draw. I am of the opinion, that Singles is suffering due to the cost of quarters (though, I find that to be a limited viewpoint upon the value of singles play). In any case, I have decided to go with "free play" mode with a table fee for that specific "two events in one" evening. At the same time, I was hoping to institute something similar at Stinger's in the near future...with a major difference! There will be no tourney, yet the tables will be on "free play" mode with the same table fees, but as a series of events meant to improve how we play the game. Basically, an extended outing of Expert "lessons" designed to draw forth questions about one's game and find the best path towards improvement.

I have quite a few systems that I utilize to improve my game. There are others in our community that do as well. They can be shared. Thus, I hope to incorporate this belief into an "event", without an actual tourney! Open tables for open discussions and lessons upon how to improve ball control, how to do this or that shot, or just have a general good time playing a bunch of pick up games prior to the "main" event. Obviously, I need to work on the format of this aspiration a bit, prior to implementing it...yet, it is the direction I am trying to design around for 2 events a month at the Stinger's location.

I wish everyone to know, that in the near future I will be "missing in action" from foosball. I am bringing this to everyone's attention now, in order to ensure that the information is known when it matters. Basically, in December I will attempt to address some personal health matters. The result of this choice will remove me from playing foosball for quite some time. With no definitive date for me to provide as far as when I will be back.

I have already begun reaching out to ensure that the Stinger's and Duke's events will be covered. Yet, I would appreciate any help any of you could provide once this begins. With this in mind, if you have any desire to run a tournament during the months of December, January, and February (possibly longer to be honest), please let me know. Thus far, Billy Nolan, Michael Lawrence, and Bob Duncan have stepped forward to offer what help they can. And, I sincerely appreciate this.

However, given the unknowns concerning my situation, I feel it necessary to reach out to all of you in an effort to further bolster possible contingencies. I sincerely do not wish to drop the ball, so to speak, in regard to my commitment to the foosball community while I take some necessary time for myself. Nor do I wish to impose upon any of you. Yet, I am in a position where I am forced to recognize a need for help.

Table SOLD

Looking to sell the table I have in my house. It is a T2000 but it is nearly converted to 3000, the only part I never got around to converting is the angle strip along the sides. I do have the tape strip to replace it though...just never decided to actually do it. Men and bearings are all 3000 style parts.

The table has no light, and thus no scoring pieces, as Billy was in need of it for a league table. I am asking for $500.00, yet that is negotiable. I can even deliver it if you live reasonably near enough. It is a full coin-op table, NOT a home model. I have the ball mechanism blocked off (which is easily removed), to enable easy free play.

Anyways, let me know if you are interested in purchasing it. I can be reached at 623-666-1060.

FROM BRYAN HENDRICKS:

As mentioned to several of you, tomorrow is Friday the 13th and WeFoos is adding $100 to the prize pool AS LONG AS, you guessed it, thirteen (13) or more teams are entered in tomorrow night’s BYP. Rissa and I will be playing as a team and we’re taking on all challengers. As an aside, Nick has confirmed he WILL NOT be in attendance so the extra cash is up for grabs as I know several potential teams are capable of taking us out, however we do fully expect any of you wannabe challengers to bring it!

With 13 teams, expect payouts to breakdown as follows:
1st - $180
2nd - $110
3rd - $50
4th - $20

Call myself or Jesse in advance if you have any questions! See you at Duke’s tomorrow night for an educational experience!

PS. If you actually believe you have a chance to win tomorrow be sure to invite fellow players to watch your spectacular victory over Rissa and myself wink

PPS. Stay tuned for announcements to Colorado State!

I wanted to take a moment to point out the October 27th event at Duke's Sport Bar. Recently Arizona Foosball had teamed up with Steve of Breakthrough Beverage for the El Jimador events. Well, Steve will also be be holding an event at Duke's on October 27th for a Halloween promotion for Jack Daniels.

His promotion will only be running from 7 to 9 or 10. However, he wishes to include the foos crew in the event by including a Jack Daniels "Bag of Swag" awarded to the team that wins the tournament! In addition, Steve also asked me to put the idea out there that anyone that shows up in a Halloween outfit will get a round of Jack Daniels on him!

So, grab a partner, get yourself all freaky deaky and come on down!

Just a quick note to let everyone know that I have updated the Coming Events link for November concerning the tournaments at both Duke's and Stinger's. Of particular note, I want to make everyone aware that Duke's is going to be having a month of Open Doubles (while still keeping the Singles option open as well). So, start locking in some partners and look forward to a month of hardcore foosin'!

We need to talk...

I have been experiencing a string of events that are making things incredibly difficult for me to maintain a civil attitude. People are opening tables own their own. Stuffing pockets. Bending mother fucking prongs on the ball mechanism to enable free play. These things are in addition to balls being stolen and someone outright breaking into a couple tables to take the funds.

I feel that I have been more than fair with everyone while trying to find a happy balance with expenses and free play. Why? Because I like free play, damn it! I didn't always own a table, and free play was incredible times for me. I often open up a table, or keep a "free" play table out from the tournament, for no other reason then to provide an opportunity to play and bring us all together. Plus, as Brian Hendricks pointed out to me, this can only help local foosball by increasing the amount of sales for the bar. Though, I must say, they all should be providing us some sort of fooser beer special...like all beer is free for Jesse or something similar.

Yet, these things are a risk for me...AND for you! If everyone keeps thinking that this shit is free, then the ability to perform upkeep on tables is severally compromised. Look, I am not in this business to "take" from you without giving back. I am, in no way, trying to get rich off of 8 foosball tables! I invite you to look online at the prices of foosball parts...PLEASE! Maybe then more people will begin to realize that this game is actually expensive! Hell, my time alone is more valuable to me then what I ever could make from foosball. It is NOT ABOUT THE MONEY!

It is about the chess match without the chessboard. It is about the eclectic group of foosers that I consider friends. Yet, I am starting to feel the same sort of pressure to simply shut down all forms of free play. I am a heartbeat away from padlocking every damn table simply to make it all stop. But, I know I can't. That it would bother me more than any of you. So, instead, I would rather ask you to watch out for all of us. I don't need you telling me anything gestapo style. I just want you to not take part. To stop the abuse if you see it. Nothing more. Nothing less.
