2. Bryan H / Rissa $40.00
3. Jesse R / Michael L

Only 3 people showed that wanted to play singles, so it was not played. On a side note, this was my first experience with Nick and Mo as a team...lets just say that passing game was excellent! I look forward to more surprises and competition as I adjust to playing again. As a reminder, next week is Open Doubles. As Open Doubles usually has a decent crowd, I ask that everyone respect the 8:30 start time...'cuz that's when it will start!

Great games tonight everyone. Tournament ran pretty smoothly and we were out at a very decent time. On the other hand, the singles event is suffering a bit here lately. There are a few there each time, but not enough of us to make it an event.

With this in mind, and to ensure that those that show up early for the singles event do not feel like they wasted a trip, I will be leaving 1 table open for free play if singles does not happen due to attendance. To repeat, only 1 table will be open for free play. Hold it by winning, or make way for the next team! This turned out to be a great time for myself prior to the DYP, and I see no reason not to continue it as a tradition. Being able to play pick up games, yet having the extra incentive to hold the one free play table, may prove to be a hella lotta fun!

Or not...I don't know. Just trying to get some extra bodies to show up for the singles is all.

Duke's Tournaments and Transparency

As many of you know, I have begun running the tournaments at Duke's on Friday nights. I am no stranger to the Phoenix Foosball community, so my style of tournament directing should come as little surprise for most. I am definitely a firm believer in the management of time. Yet, I do enjoy goofing off and having a good time, far more often than not. The competition in the Valley is great, and growing stronger. The key here is going to be for all of us to strive for balance and consideration of our fellow foosers.

For the most part, I wish Duke's to be where we play the game in as near to actual major tournament play standards as feasible given that its a weekly engagement. In a nutshell, there will not be any changes to the format that Brad set up. No high/low tournaments, no point spotting tournaments, or anything of the like will be added to the current set up. In fact, I do not wish to change much of anything that Brad and Bill worked hard at setting up.

Thus, I feel strongly that Duke's must remain a strait up tournament style of play in order to boost the effectiveness of Arizona players in general as they head to major tournaments around the year. With this in mind, I also feel it is important to point out to everyone that it is not the Tournament Director alone that makes a tournament run smoothly. It actually falls upon all of us as players and supporters of the sport. Know how the game is played, specifically, all of us should try to learn the rules of the game (http://www.foosball.com/learn/rules/ustsa/). It makes things easier. Yet, know your limitations and your rights as a player. Here are a two things of importance based upon recent events:

-Once a match is called, it starts a clock of three minutes...which I will never seriously enforce based upon standards necessary for much larger tournaments. However, I must take it into consideration if one of the teams that were called demands it of me. Let me clarify this statement. Everyone has the right to ask for their match to start (ask for a Recall), once it has been called, after a reasonable amount of time. It is up to the Tournament Director to actually enforce the rules concerning forfeiture of games and/or match though. On this issue, I ask that everyone please understand that we all approach the game differently, but that everyone values their time. If there is something that happens that results in a recall, then it is what it is. The recall will be applied.

-Next, I feel the need to point out that too many players are abusing the wall with the five man. Far too often I see players hitting the ball into the wall repeatedly because it is too close to it...that is illegal. If, the ball gets stuck due to the tape, you get the ball off and reset with a one wall count. You do not hit the ball into the wall 2 to 3 times and then proceed as normal. Granted, most of us are going to give leeway concerning this, but I really do not want to see a swath of Phoenix players arriving at larger tournaments with such a nasty habit. You will be called for it, and it will disrupt your game. Lets try to be more aware of this issue and not normalize such tendencies.

Now, moving on to some transparency here. As most are aware, there is a D.Y.P. tournament coming up in August that will have a larger pot based upon attendance of Duke's tournaments (60%). Currently, it looks like 27 events. Hence, 16 events are needed to qualify for the tournament. At this time, I am not positive which Friday it shall be held, as I have other things I need to know outside of Foosball (though I am guessing mid-month at the earliest). This matter shall be resolved as soon as reality allows.

Finally, I do not want anyone caught off guard concerning where they are as far as qualifying. So, I put together a simplistic spreadsheet for myself that I decided to post for everyone. I will try to re-post this at the end of each month. I am attaching two formats in an effort to make things easier for as many as I can (Open format -.ods- and Excel -.xlsx-). Please feel free to address any issues anyone may find with attendance. I do not want to accidentally miss someone as we go along.

For the last time MIGHTY! It's, PUFF...PUFF...PASS!! There IS a defined table fee in place, its called a "coin mechanism"!

Wait! This is not MY solution..it was the solution put in place given what was available at the time and has stood the test of time. I do agree that quarters are a pain in the ass...trust me, you have very little idea about how much of a pain in the ass they represent. Yet, the optics and the profits, would suffer without the coin mechanism. Just think about it, and I am sure anyone of us can see that.

For one, the upfront fee would be much steeper for the average player. Sure, taking on an extra five dollars may not seem like much for the players that consistently place in the top three, but it is a barrier for those looking for luck and/or a good night. Its not always so simple is all I mean. Right now, you are correct, those that consistently place...pay more in quarters. But they get money from the tournament, so....I see no reason to experiment further with the the pay structure.

You consistently win, you consistently pay a couple dollars more. In a perfect world, I would like to replace these "coin mechanisms" with something more appropriate and responsive to alternative forms of payment. But, really, that tech is so far down the line that we will be lucky to see it in our lifetimes in an applicable manner as it relates to foosball.

That must be nice! I have a weekly date with my piece of shit back. I never know even how long it will take me to drive home after playing. Took me about an 1 and 45 minutes last week! Had to keep pulling over to sit out the pain. And, are you not like 50 years my senior Bob?! WTF! I call bullshit on life!! Probably pick me up with your bad back and whip me around in the time it takes me to walk 2 feet!

Week after week, I start good, run into pain, and finish like a big old pile of shit! Steroids soon though peeps! I am primed for some Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa shit here! After all, there is no drug testing in foosball! ... {OMG! Perish that line of thought entirely!}

In addition, I appreciate the support Brad, it means a lot. Soon we must engineer some Badger Blowouts of our own!

Yes, tonight is at Duke's. The left hand side has the link "Coming Events" that will provide most information. Tonight is a B.Y.P. event, but we usually have a few people that show without a partner.
